DNA and other ancestry research is in vogue today. My family members while enjoying this adventure realized that J.O.Crump, a great grand father of my wife was a Civil War veteran from Tennessee and rode with Forest! This factoid is why "They Rode With Forrest" was procured and read. The book is an attempt to identify Civil War Confederate veterans by unit and document their service with the great Confederate cavalryman, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Forrest did a substantial amount of recruiting through out Tennessee and Mississippi which was his primary area of responsibility. One of the marvels of his history was that he was charged with recruitment, building and training of Calvary units that were subsequently turned over to others to command. The author used the post Civil War Association of Nathan Bedford Forrest veterans as the reference to who did what and when. These annual Association meetings included attendance records that documented who attended and their eligibility to attend was based on documented service with Nathan Bedford Forrest sometime during that war. In the case of J.O. Crump his name appears of the attendance roster of a number of the annual meetings, yet, it was difficult for family members to document the where and what was his service. As a research vehicle this book has merit and the author did quite a bit of digging to produce this book to his credit.
