The sections on proper coffee-making were repetitive, the history of the bean was speculative, and the advertisement at the end was ham-fisted. That said, the audiobook was good company on my drive home from work, and it's always interesting to learn about how people lived 150 years ago. And after all, what's life without coffee?

I think I learnt more about how much it must have sucked to be a housewife in the 1800s than about how to make coffee.
One thing I did take away is you can mix an egg with your coffee grounds to eliminate all the bitterness (though the resulting sludge is terrifying).

Here is a book from 1887 that has six chapters by six different women on how to make that perfect pot of coffee. The book shows how little has changed with making good coffee; one big difference I noticed early on is the absence of those *bleh* flavored coffees that are so prevalent today.
Some of the coffee making tips presented is how to mix different kinds of coffees to make varying strengths, the addition of fish skin (!) to clarify the brew; the addition of egg white and eggshells to the grounds before brewing, how to roast coffee beans, and so much more! The e-book version I discovered on Project Gutenberg is illustrated and complete with advertisements.
Oh, how I long for these simpler times!

As a nation, the American people want the best of everything, and intend to have that best. Furthermore, they are very properly and intelligently eager to turn it to the greatest advantage. But what avails the best raw material if it be not prepared in such a manner as to develop and secure its subtle, delicate, volatile and enlivening qualities? The very same ingredients may be injurious and depressing, or wholesome and exhilarating, according to the way in which they are treated.
