The introduction, which appears in both English and French, details the formation of this bibliography from Etienne Balazs' original conception in the 1950s to its realization at the end of the 1970s. The copious catalogue entries, either in English or French, are organized into five categories by subject Classics, Histories, Philosophers, Collections, and Collectanea . These main subjects are further subdivided into smaller categories, with entries grouped beneath the subheadings. The works catalogued are mostly from the period of the Sung Dynasty and shortly thereafter, making this compilation truly impressive and important for the scholar of Chinese books. Chinese translations and transliterations of the titles and other pertinent information appear about many of the items and abbreviations in the volume.
