Brief but excellent book. Highly recommend to men (it’s Phil’s target audience) of all backgrounds who would like to understand themselves better and yes, become more like the “lion.”

This book Is only 116 pages, but it is full of so many insights. Anyone can benefit from this book, which encourages the reader toward a life of knowing others and being known by them. Very accessible and well written. I gleaned a lot from this book.

Phil Hardin's very readable book could just as well be for women as for men. It's all about having emotional and spiritual health by knowing oneself and being known by others. Those who are emotionally and spiritually unhealthy can be described by three categories, each represented by an animal. The bull personality has no self knowledge at all, but others can look at him and easily identify his flaws. The chameleon knows himself, but is ashamed and will not reveal himself to others. The turtle has no self-insight and is not known by others. The lion knows himself and is known by others. Hardin identifies what it is like to live with each particular personality type, what they want, what they are afraid of, and how they can change to be a lion.

This is a very helpful model for looking at and thinking about maladaptive personalities. I know Mr. Hardin personally and can vouch for the fact that he has helped hundreds and hundreds of men through his therapy and through his men's weekend retreats.
