Dr. Mark Shaw has identified five mentalities that parents inadvertently instill in their children that lead to addictive thinking in later years. The progression of Entitlement, Consumer, Victim, Perishing and Rebellious mentalities are described in practical detail followed by biblical replacement mentalities that change your child's thinking to be more Christ-centered than self-centered.
There are some basic editing errors, and the writing style is pretty bland and straightforward. However, the perspective Shaw has on parenting is unique and helpful. He is a nouthetic counselor for people with addictions (which he defines biblically as idolatry). He uses his years of counseling experience to explain the path of addiction/idolatry and how to train your child biblically and thereby deliberately fight against the trend toward idolatry. It's a very practical book, and very biblically based, and not quite what I was expecting when I read the title. :)
