From the blood-splattered cover featuring a jagged-toothed shark, to dark and menacing photographs of blood-clouded water and lurking predators, “Bull Shark Attack,” provides a sensational account of true shark attacks. It is not a book for the squeamish.

“Killer in the Water,” tells the story of 8-year-old Jessie Arbogast, who was attacked while vacationing in Florida. The text describes how the shark’s “rows of sharp teeth sliced into his arm.” It describes how Jessie screamed as his arm was “ripped from his body.” Accompanying photographs show a shark lurking behind the legs of a person standing, unsuspecting, in the water, and a shark with clouds of blood pouring from its mouth. The story goes on to describe how the shark was shot by a park ranger who “forced open its jaws to save Jessie’s arm.” After hour of surgery the arm was reattched, but Jessie may never walk normally again.

Barely pausing for breath, the text moves on to “Fishing for Disaster,” A story of two brothers fishing in waist-deep water. A bull shark bites Craig in the leg and holds on while his brother Brian tries to pull Craig to safety and the shore. “Craig tried to pry the shark’s jaws of his leg. But its teeth were like knives. They shredded his hands...” This story includes blood-clouded pictures of a shark, a shark shadow off shore from a swimming beach, and a picture of one-legged Craig swimming through dark water.

Bull sharks are violent predators that have attacked people, pets, and livestock in shallow water. Attacks have taken place in saltwater and freshwater. The stories offered here are true.

But the presentation is sensational. The book capitalizes on the common fears many readers have of sharks. Even though tips to avoid shark attacks are provided, along with some pointers about what to do if you are attacked -- the layout still contributes to the overall dark and deliberately disturbing ambience of the book. Readers will not feel safe about returning to open water any time in the near future.

Books like this are so informational for children and hold such a wealth of knowledge. I really enjoy reading books, like this one and many others to my children, for if you start them young then they will grow to have a love for reading and adventure!
