Emma enters a writing contest. She loves writing and is confident that she will win. But when that doesn't happen, will Emma want to keep writing? Emma is Deaf and often uses sign language to communicate, and this early chapter book includes an ASL fingerspelling chart and a sign language guide.
As happens so often in books for early readers, the focus of the book is a big contest. The big question posed here goes, "If Emma doesn't win this contest, will she want to keep on writing?"
All the more reason, imo, for parents to introduce children to one hobby at a time. Allowing that child to explore the intrinsic value of that activity, rather than making that hobby all about competition and popularity.
What I like best about this book is how, at the end, readers can find an ASL fingerspelling chart and a sign language guide.
FIVE STARS for a gently adventurous story, and an educational one.
I l really like this series. Each book has the ASL alphabet at the beginning. Small words in the story are finger spelled out. There is also a glossary at the end of each book. Short, easy books perfect for emergent readers.
