Return to the virus-infected Manhattan of Prototype in this new graphic novel bridging the blockbuster game with its highly anticipated sequel! Written by Prototype 2 game and comics scribe Dan Jolley ( The Liberty File, Firestorm, BloodHound), this volume includes three original stories, previously only available digitally, enriching the stories of the central characters of Prototype 2 and revealing secrets of the devastated NYZ!
Prototype 2 is divided into three parts: The Anchor, The Survivors and The Labyrinth.
The Anchor presents Alex's story, of how he got to lose faith in humanity. It impressed me because of two reasons. One I love Alex; he is one of my most favorite characters ever. And two, the events are very emotional and touching.
The Survivors, as you can probably tell by now, presents the story of three survivors in the Manhattan area. I failed to get what role these survivors will play in the future of Prototype, but we’ll probably see in the future comics (if there are any) and/or the Prototype 2 game.
And the final part, The Labyrinth, presents Sgt. James Heller - a badass marine who doesn't take shit from anyone. Oh, he's also the next Prototype 2 (video game) protagonist. Excited yet? I know I am!
Because it's an advance copy, the text is painfully difficult to read. Ouch, my poor little eyes. This is the only complaint I have about the book.
I would recommend Prototype 2 only for the fans of the game. The rest of you... I don't think you'll get much from what's going on. Unless you've read the first Prototype comic and enjoyed it. Which means you are a fan of the game. And now we have an endless circle going on.
"I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be human."
When requesting Prototype 2 off NetGalley, I admit I knew nothing of it. All I wanted was a good graphic novel, a easy read. However, Prototype 2 was everything but. Set right after a virus breakout, Prototype 2 is divided into three parts: The Anchor, The Survivors and The Labyrinth. Everything is fine, except for a few over the top expressions and extremely small text that hurts my poor eyes.
Prototype 2 is based off the video game, so for readers who are unfamiliar with the game adaptation or haven't at least read the first Prototype comic and enjoyed it, I don't think you'll get much from this edition. But, the art and the whole "you-better-run-or-those-creepy-red-things-will-eat-you" Prototype 2 had going on was pretty badass.

An ARC copy was provided via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
Based on the video game prototype 2 has you as a sergent james heller on a task to find alex mercer and kill him assisted by father guera and alex's sister Amanda. He finds out that daughter who thought was dead is alive I wont waste the ending but i reconmend you read this book it's full of intense action and drama it's awesome to see someone to make a book about a game i loved as a kid.
As expected, the stories are mediocre and add little to the stories of the game. The volume has three of them featuring a different cast each. It has very little going for it.
After the events of the first game Alex Mercer uses his powers to fight organized crime in his signature brutal way. He is happy to help regular people and finds they are not united, but ruled by greed and selfishness. He decides to take a break to think about humanity and his place in the world. He meets Flint and his daughter Autumn. Things are looking up until a lumber mill owner named Zurich demands that Flint sell his land. Alex absorbs one of the men sent to torch Flint's house and pays Zurich a visit.
The pipe-warrior cop Conrad Stevens is doing his best to protect busty blonde Marcie and 13-year-old religious zealot Ami Levin in the Red Zone. His trusty pipe cuts through the infected like a hot knife through butter.
Photographer Saul Benjamin and marine sgt. James Heller find themselves in a prison guarded by mysterious men. The latter is the character you control in the Prototype 2 game. Oops, spoiler! Saul soon gets carried away and is heard screaming in pain. James is determined to escape the prison, though he faces dangerous mutated people on his way out.
I didn't personally read this but my partner did for the sake of putting a review on my blog so I thought I'd put it here too.
This prequel graphic novel is split into 3 separate stories. The first of which, "The Anchor", follows Alex Mercer after the events of the first Prototype game. Alex was the main character you played in Prototype, following his story of what happened to him when he awakes in a goverment morgue. And I won't spoil what the ending of the story was here. In this story, Alex travels the world trying to fit back into humanity but only finding that humans are "worse than worthless, humans are vermin". Just seeing how people treat other in every day life, showing no care for your fellow human on the street. This story which no doubt leads straight into the events of the second Prototype game which, at this date, I have still to play.
The second story, "The Survivors", follows a small group of 3 people - Conrad, Marcie and a young boy called Ami Levin. We follow this group just trying to escape the red zone, which is the area most affected by the blacklight virus. Giving us an idea of the extreme measures they need to take just to survive which includes attacking the private military that are there to supposedly protect the uninfected. We follow the journey with them making it back to the green zone where no infection exists at - which point I will not spoil what happens. With these people I am not sure if the story continues into the game itself but, considering it is from the same writer of the game, I would like to hope so.
The third and last story, "The Labyrinth", follows the origin of your character in Prototype 2, Sgt. James Heller. He wakes up with a stranger in some sort of prison cell where he is told people are getting experimented on, after his cell mate is removed from the cell something happens and his cell opens up. He discovers nobody seems to be around except a few of the infected, after dispatching them he finds a store room and a weapon and discovers more survivors. And when in a situation of taking the life of an unarmed scientist that had done experiments on people, he decides not to execute him and we discover it was all a test. He wakes up on a military base with no memory of what had happened and is told a sniper grazed his head with a bullet.
The art design for each story is done by 3 seperate people so each one has its own style. My personal opinion is the 1st and 3rd were very well drawn. The 2nd story I wasn't as keen on, especially the writing, it was dificult to read on the e-reader. So if you have a choice and really want these little extra stories in the Prototype world I would pick up a physical copy as the digital copy, even on my PC monitor, got hard to read at some points. With that being the only negative, I found the sories were well writen and involving. I highly recommend anyone that enjoys the world of Prototype to check this out.
Three mini stories in one! I haven't played the game, but the illustrations were pretty badass. Love the creepy vibe and the heart-wrenching stories. Made it feel very real.
