b 1452 - d 1516
The first 5 pages definitely do NOT read like something for young readers.
e.g. from p 8: At the start of the 15th century, the cities [of Venice, Florence, Genoa, and Milan] had been converted into centers of political, economic, and cultural activities. They became places where poets and writers such as Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, and Bocaccio, architects such as Filarete and Leon Battista Alberti, and thinkers such as Coluccio Salutatti were defining the idea that human conduct, reinforced by reason could direct the destiny of every one of us and of the community.
Fortunately, after this unfriendly intro, the reading style and content becomes much more accessible:
p. 11: My youth was sweet in many ways, but especially because I had a stepfather who was a pastry chef and made very delicious treats.
Now that is a strong first sentence.
Those first pages would have been more appropriate at the end, helping young readers see how DaVinci 'fit' into the 15th century.
This meshes nicely with Konigsburg's The Second Mrs. Gioconda, re-enforcing much of what she built into her plot, as well as adding more about the personalities and da Vinci's work.
