Stephen Graham (1884 - 1975) was a British journalist, travel-writer, essayist and novelist. His best-known books recount his travels around pre-revolutionary Russia and his journey to Jerusalem with a group of Russian Christian pilgrims. Most of his works express his sympathy for the poor, for agricultural labourers and for tramps, and his distaste for industrialisation.

"Before the war for £10 you received 94 roubles, but now you receive 150. Last year after the great Russian retreat the exchange stood at over 160, but banks refused to give more than a nominal exchange."🤔🤔🤔

This is an important account about Russia, but especially about the Russian people during WWI. Stephen Graham had been there twice. He learned Russian and taught English. He surely had good friends there, thus this "positive regard" towards (almost) all things Russian. A very Christian regard, obviously. That was a time when England and Russia were allies facing Germany.

In our days, for some, that "positive regard" may be a hard attitude to display. You know why. And yet, one should distinguish the people from those in power.

UPDATE

This is Russia in 2022; how different from 1916....

(serving Russia is a real job)
