This coming of age story is very different from my normal reading choices. It was a lot more gentle and had a much slower pace. I enjoyed it. The author treats us as an observer of the tribe. We know no more than they do as the story progresses. We are along for the ride.
A few times I lost track of characters because it was difficult for me to remember the peripheral characters whose names don't come up all that often. I have a hard time with names in general, but these names are all descriptive using more than a couple of words, such as Runs With Wolves. The names are often abbreviated causing me to think twice sometimes. But that is my little quirk.
The story is well written and follows such a natural rhythm and pace that it is very easy to read. This is a great book to read at bedtime because it is so soothing and didn't get my mind all riled up.
It is a great book for teens and young adults as well as adults of any age to read. I love getting immersed in cultures different from my own and appreciate how the author indicated that this band of peoples has traditions that differ from other similar bands of people. I am always fascinated by how that comes to be that one group of people develop an aggressive, violent mindset while others develop a respectful and peace oriented mindset.
There is a lot to think about within these pages if your mind does that sort of thing. It is such a good book for just plain reading for enjoyment and escape, too.
