Follow Exendrik, prince of Belasi, as he embarks on a journey to save his kingdom. Called upon by Lady Etha, he is sent on a quest to recover a key that, in the wrong hands, could destroy his people. He must travel to the edge of his kingdom, where the Gate to Belasi stands. Here, they fear a dangerous enemy will use the key to enter the unwary realm. But as his adventure continues, a more sinister plot begins to unfold. Now he must discover the culprit behind a treacherous scheme with the help of some unlikely allies. But the truth is one they never expected.
Given that this is not my typical read, I was a little apprehensive. I usually find it hard to be drawn in to stories like this. But, this was not the case with The King's Son. J.F. Castillo did such a great job here. The way everything is described to us, in such detail, you're able to really picture the village and temple, the clothing, the executions, everything. I was pulled in after the first few pages. This story is truly about the king's son, Exendric. His father has stepped down and has appointed Exendric over the kingdom. The only problem is, the King is still calling all of the shots and not so great ones at that. The people are in an uproar about these happenings and are not happy with the Prince because of it. Soon, though, the Prince is sent on a journey, a mission of sorts. We meet some very interesting characters along the way. Those who are willing to help and some who are not. They all make the story better. It wouldn't be as great as it is without each of them. We are left with a mild cliffhanger. But no worries, the next book is out so we can pick up right where we left off.
Reviewed for Round Table Book Reviews, 3.5 Stars The King’s Son by J.T. Castillo is a fantasy with several surprising twists. I struggled to connect with the characters in the beginning. We are thrown into a new world introduced to the king’s son, Exendrik, right away. The king acts on several important issues but we really don’t know why. The viewpoint is of the king’s son and his inner struggle with events. The story picks up as Exendrik is given a task by Etha a priestess he has known since he was a small boy. He meets interesting people and is exposed to viewpoints that are very different than those he was privy to in the castle. When he meets Fen, a poor thief the story really takes off. Through many adventures Exendrik travels the country trying to fulfill his mission. He gathers good people to him as he goes. I enjoyed getting to know Fen, Avor, Lappet and Bartel. They are more likable and better developed than Exendrik. There definitely isn’t a HEA in this book. We know it is part of a series but the cliffhanger is a big one.
I'm a big character person. If you've ever read a review from me, then you already know that. If I can't connect to the characters then I won't finish reading a book. In this one, JF has done a great job at crafting unique and many sided characters. They are complex- which is perfect for the genre! They're totally connectable, but also you end up not knowing what's what with them. They evolve and change. A huge plus. We want our characters to grow and change with the story!
The story itself is one that is absolutely perfect for the genre. We have a journey to save a kingdom and a prince that needs to show how awesome he is... what could possible happen? Easy, right? Well, you'll have to read the story to find out! I'm not giving away ANYTHING!
This is the first installment in the five part series. It's a great start to what is sure to be an epic fantasy adventure.
If you enjoy a good book that leaves you wondering what will happen next and leads you on a fantastic adventure, then grab a copy of this one today!
While this is not my normal genre to read, I must say it sucked me in.
The King's Son follows Exendrik, who is oddly, the King's son. He is the ruler because his father stepped down as King due to health reasons. However, his father is still calling the shots. Bad shots too. The people have come to dislike Exendrik even though he has had nothing to do with the horrible decisions being made.
Something important to the kingdom is stolen and Exendrik takes this as a chance to show the people that he isn't bad and that he'd do anything for the kingdom.
We meet a few folks along the path of his journey and they are quite interesting themselves.
We are left with a cliffhanger, but thats ok because the whole series is out and we can continue on to the next book to find out more!!
I can't wait to see what happens next in Exendrik's life.
In this story we follow Exendrik, the prince of Belasi, as he embarks on a journey to save his kingdom. Exendrik is sent on a quest to recover a key that was stolen and in the wrong hands, could destroy his people.
This story was well written and has many twists and keeps your attention throughout. It is perfect for this particular genre. The characters are complex and just as unique as the story itself. Castillo does a wonderful job at making them change and grow throughout the story. The details of the descriptions Castillo gives allows us to imagine what everything looks like. Like a movie in your head.
Although we are left with a cliffhanger,it's ok because the whole series is out and we can continue on to the next book to find out what happens next.
I look forward to seeing more from JF Castillo and would recommend this story to any fan of classic fantasy adventure.
This was a really enjoyable fantasy story. We follow Exendrik, who is The King’s Son, on a quest to find a stolen key to the gates of the Kingdom. If this key falls into the wrong hands the whole Kingdom will be destroyed. He encounters some very interesting characters along the way, which add a touch of humour. As the story unfolds, we come to realise that there is a much more sinister twist in the tale.
Very easy to read & get into the story, although it ended on a Cliffhanger. The characters were really great, and I enjoyed their banter. I can see this going over well with young teens. Very enjoyable.
