This is a very sweet book written by a very sweet friend! I read it bit by bit in order to savor the story of Lily Kate and her adventures in the historic community that we share. Lily Kate was an orphan from the low country, who was raised by her Nana. Sadly her mother had died of complications following childbirth, and her father, an army pilot in WW2 was never identified and could not be found. Her Nana passed away the summer that Lily Kate turned 12. She lost the only family that she ever knew, and now she was alone in the world.
She had to move almost 200 miles from her home in Charleston and was welcomed in the Church Home orphanage in York SC. LilyKate easily made friends, but the transition to 7th grade at McCelvey Elementary School was tricky one, as the town children could be unkind to the Church Home students. Lilly Kate was a promising student and had the great luck to be provided an adult mentor to meet with weekly to explore the community and hone her observational and writing skills. Both of the main characters Lily Kate and her mentor, Ms Helen Hall were very outgoing, curious and friendly. They seemed to hit it off right away even though Ms Helen was old enough to be LK's grandmother! Most of the rest of the chapters explore York via "field trips" some planned, others spontaneous that Lily Kate and Ms. Helen had together. The school year flys by. Things wrap up, at the end of this tale, with a very delightful surprise for the two fast friends.

Leisurely paced, "A Place for Lily Kate" follows the formative years of a young South Carolina girl who is placed in an Episcopal Home following the death of her beloved grandmother; the last known living relative. Glimpses of small town life, accompanied by a rather miraculous ending, make this short story quite satisfying and enjoyable to read.
