A young man discovers himself and finds love as the world he knows collapses around him. And in The Collapse, he finds Hope...A Hope that is stolen from him when a New Government rises from the ashes of The Collapse, a Government bent on the eradication of Deviants like him - until the New Government can find "the cure."These are his words.
The premise of this novel was interesting. It takes place at a time when the country is convulsing with ruin and catastrophe. Much of the population is wiped out, and survivors are left to rebuild. The book focuses on a gay couple who are a part of an idealistic community, surviving in peace.... Until representatives of the new government turn up and we soon find it to be a ultra-fascist, moralistic regime that is bent on wiping out all vestiges of homosexuality through reprogramming, and then by even more dire methods.
It is an interesting premise, and events unfold that may keep you reading to the end. It should be an exercise in excitement.... But sadly, it is not. First of all, and unfortunately, the writing is not the best. Secondly, there are too many cliche's and forced situations in this book, so the characters are never believable. There are also a couple of sex scenes that are well over the top. That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing..... Unless one wants his or her writing to be taken seriously.
The premise of a dystopian society interlaced with an LGBT rights allegory is incredibly unimaginative and reductive. The author's minimal talet is showcased in a narrative full of pretentious meandering that comes across as rather sophomoric and tired.
I took a chance on a self-published author and after the first few pages understand why this piece of work wouldn't have made it past the stack of other atrocious manuscripts on the floor of a third rate literary agent's office.
Mr. Dotinga may want to attempt to hone his skills in some sort of writer's workshop, but given what he has presented in Deviant Zero even the most pedestrian writing program might be too advanced for him.
