John Brown and the Last Train is the story of John Brown and his last raid on Missouri slave farms and the subsequent trip north to Canada. Along the way, a baby was born to a Freedom Seeker. They fought in the Battle of the Spurs. They received help from the major UGR Stations in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois. Famous detective, Allan Pinkerton helped them get across to Canada. This is historical fiction based on factual events and told through the voices of the Freedom Seekers.

This book was a quick read but one I couldn't enjoy. The author took an actual historical event and crammed it into 60 pages. That itself just makes this book feel rushed and leaves a lot out.
The biggest problem was the label of historical fiction. Each chapter contains only a few pages and actually starts off with real facts. The fiction part is the fictionalized commentary of four of the slaves in each section. That is where the author gets very creative and those commentaries are suppose to be the story. Almost every section talks about the new mom quieting her newborn with cough syrup and with what is usually found in that I was surprised the baby actually survived the journey.
The other problems were the illustrations. They weren't the best but they also failed to match up with parts of the story which really bugged me a lot.
Maybe someone will enjoy this more than I did.
