A specialist in American economic history, Carter Lyman Goodrich graduated from Amherst College in 1918 and earned a Ph.D. in 1921 from the University of Chicago. Goodrich was professor of economics at Columbia University from 1931 to 1963 and Mellon professor of history and professor of economics at the University of Pittsburgh from 1963 until his death.
Goodrich also served in a variety of government positions, including as a member of the delegation on economic depression, League of Nations from 1928 to 1945, the United States Labor Commissioner in Geneva in 1936‐37, a member of the governing body of the International Labor Organization from 1936 to 1946 and chairman from 1939 to 1945, consultant to the United Nations from 1948 to 1951, special representative of its Secretary General to Bolivia in 1952‐53, and chief of the United Nations Economic Survey Mission to Vietnam from 1955 until 1956.
