Dahomey History: Kingdom Of Dahomey, Dahomey Tribe And The Women Warriors Of Dahomey

Rate this book
Africa has a long history of being a visually attractive, intellectually talented, and culturally diverse continent. The progress, challenges, defeats, and relentless advancement of the African people are all depicted in numerous stories about their past.

The slave trade helped the African Kingdom of Dahomey, which was established in the seventeenth century in the region of the continent known as West Africa, grow prosperous and powerful during the 1700s and 1800s. It is now the most southern part of Benin.

In Dahomey, there existed a hierarchy of social classes. The monarch stood at the very top. He was positioned above the royal class, then commoners, and last slaves. Every government office had a male and a female employee on staff. After ensuring that the men were okay, the ladies updated the king. Women were also a part of the powerful Dahomey army.

The Dahomey kingdom was founded during the 1600s by the Alladah kings. The Atlantic coast was already being traversed by European slave traders at this time. Dahomeyans began taking slaves from other tribes. Guns and other valuables were exchanged for the inmates when they sold the prisoners to slave traders. They had slaves as well. Food for the royal palace and the military was produced on vast plantations where these slaves labored.

The empire became stronger and larger throughout the 1700s. When the slave trade was outlawed in Great Britain and other countries in the 1800s, Dahomey switched from exporting slaves to palm oil.

Around the turn of the 20th century, France seized control of Dahomey. It was combined with other regions to form the colony the French called Dahomey. This settlement achieved independence in 1960. Before adopting the name Benin, it was known as Dahomey until 1975.

The Dahomey Kingdom's story is told here.
