Prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness...this is what we commit to when we become members of The United Methodist Church, and it's a big step. But A Disciple's Path helps us look beyond membership, presenting an engaging approach to discipleship from a distinctly Wesleyan perspective. Discipleship is ongoing, so the 6-week study is perfect for new-member groups, but also works well in small groups of long-time members. It helps you develop spiritual practices, discover your unique gifts, and engage in ministry that brings transformation to your own life and to the lives of others and the world.
The Daily Workbook offers six weeks of daily readings (five per week), Scripture, a message for the day, and prompts for personal reflection.

"A Disciple's Path has transformed countless new members into deeply committed disciples - people who are using their gifts, praying in new ways, worshipping regularly and not only when it's convenient, giving sacrificially of their financial resources, and seeking to be a witness to Christ's love and light in the world. I am deeply grateful for this resource and recommend it wholeheartedly. Donna Claycomb Sokol, Pastor of Mount Veron Place United Methodist Church and author of A New Day in the City
"A Disciple's Path has the potential to revolutionize the way we view our participation in the church. Following this 'path' can transform us from wanderers into pilgrims." --Dr. Steve Harper, Retired Professor of Spiritual Formation; author of Five Marks of a Methodist and Devotional Life in the Wesleyan Tradition
"For churches transforming their invitation to membership into an opportunity for a discipleship journey." -- Lovett H. Weems, Jr., author and Distinguished Professor of Church Leadership and Director, Lewis Center for Church Leadership, Wesley Theological Seminary
"A very useful explanation of the traditional Wesleyan view of Christian discipleship, strengthened in particular by its stress on the balanced approach of the Methodist way." --Dr. Richard P. Heitzenrater, Duke University Divinity School
This is the workbook that goes along with the reader. This is a really excellent resource for learning what it means to be a disciple in the United Methodist tradition. It explores the membership vows of serving the church with prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness and how to dig deeper into a relationship with Jesus through the spiritual disciplines related to each. I will definitely recommend this to churches I work with.
We read the book and did this workbook as part of a new member class for joining a church congregation. The workbook had practical short reads with corresponding scripture and reflection questions/activities. I think this book is a great way to get people who are newer to the church on track with understanding what it means to be a follower, a Methodist, and a actively thriving member of the church. It could also be a good resource for someone who feels stagnate or disconnected in their faith.
Helpful review of Christian faith in the Methodist tradition
This daily workbook, and the companion reader volume, are designed primarily for people first coming to the Methodist denomination. But they work well as a reminder and review for those of us who have been in the church for many years and don’t always think about what the Wesley brothers thought and did that have gone on to inspire others.
Working through this book will help to equip you for discipleship. It is excellent. It will forever be on of my go to books. I would definitely recommend it.
I did the Disciple's Path with a group from my church as we were piloting this to see if it was a program we wanted to incorporate into our church for new members. I was the "newest" member out of the group who piloted this and even the more "senior" members said they received/discovered a lot about themselves during this program.
I thought this was a very good program along with the Companion Reader to understand what it means to be an Untied Methodist and why we believe the way we do. We are called to be part of a church, to grow spiritually and become a disciple of Jesus Christ. The workbook asks questions which make you think about what it really means to be a disciple, and I recommend to do the activity early in the morning so you can meditate on the questions and lesson for the day. The questions are pretty straight forward and allow deep thought and reflection. The program also goes thoroughly over what it means with our vows of giving our: prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Overall, I think it was very good and a growing experience for myself and I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking about joining a church.
Takes quite a bit of time. Has 5 days worth of work after reading the chapter in the companion reader. Very interesting & really gets you thinking about your faith. You learn a lot about the Methodist church & its history.
