Not everything is in the genes, a point made repeatedly in this excellent overview of the social-ecology of place. Lisa Berkman, one of the editors, taught my first public health course nearly 30 years ago. Her expanded vision of the etiology of disease allowed for the difficult to measure, but nonetheless important factors such as class and race, to be understood as part of our understanding of health and disease.
