After a decade as a London editor, he founded a publishing company working with writers including John Fowles, Catherine Cookson, Peter Ackroyd, Daphne du Maurier, Shirley Conran and Ted Hughes, later writing acclaimed literary biographies and cultural histories set in Yorkshire.
