This large trim, full-color book covers all aspects of stand up paddling, from buying a board and getting started on your local lake to surfing waves in Hawaii.
Informative. Comprehensive, almost. Focus is a a bit exclusive - the author's buddies and other well-known men. Little attention is given to women in the SUP world and when they are mentioned, it is rather condescending.
This book is very thorough, covering not just technique, which was my goal, but also the whole history and many of the current personalities in stand-up paddle boarding.
This books offers an interesting look at the sport of stand up paddling (SUP).
I have a basic beginner paddleboard and use it on a lake. It's not rocket science and I really enjoy it, so I wasn't sure how much I would pick up from this book, but I thought it was worth checking out from my local library.
I really liked the historical lesson about the various forms of paddling and the watercraft that different cultures use. I also liked the technical advice about how best to effectively paddle.
I really could relate to the author's sentiment that SUP provided an athletic and contemplative outlet that was fun and good for those with lower back issues and weak core muscles. I only wish that I could paddle every day, rather than every other weekend during the summer.
interesting quotes:
"...there is a world of difference between sitting astride a board or in a boat and standing tall on your own two feet. The difference in elevation is only a couple of feet, but the difference in what you can see is everything." (p. 6)
Good, very informative, pretty fun read. Sometimes maybe too many examples and stories and not enough solid information, but definitely great for starters. I appreciated all the history of SUP, was very interesting to learn about. I recommend this for anyone who is getting into SUP and wants to explore all the different ways you can enjoy the sport. Some of the pics make me want to hop in my Jeep and drive the country with my board right now!
