I found the articles in this book thought provoking and they have inspired ideas for classroom practice. Give it a read.

Anthology about second language writing in the US. I mainly used:
Matsuda, P. K. (2003). Second language writing in the twentieth century: A situated historical perspective. In B. Kroll (Ed.), Exploring the dynamics of second language writing (pp. 15-34). New York: Cambridge University Press.

I found the Matsuda piece to be very similar to another 1999 article that he had written.

Matsuda (2003) argues the importance of understanding the historical context of the field because "our theoretical and pedagogical practices are always historically situated" (p. 15).
