Ely offers a clear defense of what may be called Christian republicanism. It might be rendered by some as Christian nationalism, but he is less interested in the romantic idea of a moral nation, and more interested in the realization of a moral and virtuous Christian magistrate. he doesn't say anything that modern Evangelicals disagree with regarding the morality of the magistrate, he simply does not hide behind modernistic adulations of pluralism. If anything, the strength of Ely's piece is that unlike most American Evangelicals, Ely honestly stated his political and religious aims.
