When the bloom strikes and the government declares martial law to control the mass evacuation from the coast, Mark takes his dog, packs his car, and attempts to drive from Virginia to his daughter’s college in Maine. Not only is he in a race against time to get there before the bloom reaches her, but he has to overcome every obstacle that tries to stop him while watching the Distance to Empty display in his car count down with each mile.

As a father myself, I completely relate to the desire to do anything and everything for your child, even if that goes far beyond your ability. I think we all have those worst-case fantasies and imagine ourselves as the hero. In this book, a middle-aged widower embarks on a cross-country road trip to rescue his estranged daughter as a deadly algae bloom ravages the coast. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it is pure disaster escapism, and hope the author will write another installment.
