Lucy Daniels is the collective name for the writing team that created the bestselling children's book series Animal Ark, many of the books are also published under the name of the series creator, Ben M. Baglio.
This is actually the final book in the Animal Ark Pets series, despite the order Goodreads has the books in. This was first published in 2002. As far as I know, I have a paperback copy of the first, and only, edition. Since, in 2002, stories came out to time with the seasons, it's a sure thing that this was the last book to tie in with the last holiday of the year.
Despite the fake author name of Lucy Daniels on the cover, the real author was Narinder Dhami, who was one of the main ghostwriters of the Animal Ark Universe at this time. Although she did some reasonably good work, this has got to be one of, if not the, worst things she's ever done.
Why? Because she knows fuck all about kittens. When kittens' eyes just open, they are only two colors -- blue or red. They are never green. And yet, we've got two kittens with green eyes. Fuck sake! This was written in the days of easy Internet access in the UK. There's no excuse for this sloppiness.
The main kitten in the story is Peaches (also green eyes), who is an obsessive licker. This is treated as a cute quirk ... but it's not. This is NOT normal cat or kitten behavior. It's a symptom of several medical problems, including anxiety. Peaches will soon lick bald patches on her coat if she's not stopped.
Like most of the books on the Animal Ark Universe, this has an A and a B plot:
Plot A: Three newborn kittens are found in the Christmas cold of Wellford in the garden where Peaches lives. The mother is missing. One of the kittens is especially poorly.
Plot B: There's to be a special surprise at Welford Primary before holiday break. What, oh what, could it possibly be?
Once it hits chapter four, the book gets awfully predictable. Granted, I'm decades older than the target audience, but a six year old could figure this out. The cover gives away a lot of Plot A, but gets the color of Cobweb wrong. She's supposed to be a grey tabby, not a brown tabby. Believe it or not, there is a difference.
But hey, it was the last book in the series, so Hodder didn't care anymore. 2002 would mark the beginning of the end for the Animal Ark Universe. The spin-off series were all dropped, so efforts could be made to keep the original Animal Ark series going.
