When reading books regarding mental health and DBT, I usually find them to be unintentionally hard to relate to, as there isn’t much first hand perspective. This book is completely different - the author details their findings from personal experience and psychology / science, so I found the book to be extremely relatable and helpful in my understanding of DBT. I also have Borderline Personality Disorder and Severe Anxiety. It has given me a great idea on how to work with myself, and the book was an easy read for me. I wasn’t overwhelmed, but felt comforted in knowing my experience with issues were shared, and my bad thoughts aren’t actually subjective to me. A really excellent read from R.J Miller, and it is a book I’d STRONGLY recommend for anyone struggling, or for anyone who would like to learn more about DBT!
As someone who has completed 18 months of a dbt skills group and been in individual dbt therapy for 2 years now, I found this to be a great refresher. Often, we don’t use our skills as often as we should. Just like any other skill in life: if you don’t use it you lose it. Well, I had begun to lose my skills because I simply forgot how to apply effectively or I just completely forgot how to do it. What the heck is dbt was great at helping me to brush off the dust and relearn what I need to be successful. Props to the author because it was very well written in easy to understand lingo. I’d recommend this to anyone struggling with their mental health!
I did a DBT course last year and, like pointed out in this book, it is full of skills that if you don't use, you lose. What the heck is DBT is not only a great intro to DBT but also a wonderful reminder of all the skills I learned before. Definitely worth a read!
I wanted to know what DBT is about. I think this book does a good job of giving you that. I learned that in a nutshell DBT is a combination of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Analysis) combined with mindfulness. The book goes through the four areas of DBT and give many skills. In the end I'm not sure I could learn and practice these skills from just reading this book though.
This book is a guide to DBT, or Dialectical Behavior Therapy, but it is not an easy read. Take the time to read it more than once, and read carefully. You will get maximum benefit from doing this along with input from at least one trained professional.
I really enjoyed the introduction and how thoroughly DBT was explained. I have used CBT before but never realized that I was also using some DBT skills as well to cope with anxiety. This book was easy to follow and I hope others enjoy this book and learn about DBT.
