Brian Davis, known professionally as Michael ffolkes, was a British illustrator and cartoonist celebrated for his work on the Peter Simple column in The Daily Telegraph. He studied art at Saint Martin’s and Chelsea Schools of Art and began his career in 1949, adopting the artistic name Michael ffolkes. He became known for illustrating Punch film reviews and covers, and his distinctive all-lowercase signature, "ffolkes," was widely recognized. Davis contributed to numerous publications including Playboy, The Spectator, The New Yorker, and illustrated children’s books, notably those by Roald Dahl. His sharp wit and humor defined his work, and he published his autobiography, ffundamental ffolkes, in 1985. Davis was married twice and had three children. Known for both his artistic talent and playful personality, he left a lasting impact on British illustration and cartooning.
