Mussolini and the rise of Italian Fascism is a great book telling the history of Italy's involvement in the World Wars. This book also includes a biography of the Fascist leader, Benito Mussolini. Mussolini, also known as "Il Duce", spent much time in exile in Switzerland and Austria. In the time he spent there he studied Socialist newspapers. Upon his return to his home country of Italy he became a rifleman in WWI. He slowly gained power and built a reputation for himself. In 1919 Benito founded the Fascist party. It took Mussolini four years to gain power and destroy Italy's parliament and create a dictatorship. Benito used fear and intimidation to gain power and persuade the Italian people. Mussolini was very popular amongst the commoners. He and Adolf promised an alliance, which later included Japan. Although Italy was an enemy of the U.S. in the World Wars it is important to study the motives and tactics which our troops fought against. I enjoyed this historical text and the knowledge it provided me. I did not like that the book didn't include the effect that Mussolini's power had on the enemy forces.
