Robert Benchley (1889-1945), father of noted children's author Nathaniel Benchley and grandfather of Peter Benchley (author of Jaws), was a drama critic, an actor, and one of the greatest wits of his time. His dry humor influenced many of his contemporaries, including E.B. White, James Thurber, and S.J. Perlman, and secured him a place in the line of great American humorists that began with Mark Twain.
