'Beginning Chess' is a guide to learning chess by one of the acknowledged masters of the game. The books covers all stages of learning to play, from descriptions of the board, pieces and movers through how to open and defend. One of the great pleasures of 'Beginning Chess' is the obvious delight and infectious enthusiasm of the author, himself one of the world's chess experts. To learn chess from this book is to have Harry Golombeck at you elbow as your private coach, beguiling and thrilling you into the game.
I want people to think I sit around thinking about chess. But I don't. I played the first game in my life a few months ago, and was beat by a first-grader. Then I saw this book at a used book sale. Really enjoyed it. It's very conversational and makes chess seem pretty exciting and cool. I didn't walk through ALL of the notations and diagrams, but learning about the different plays and strategies was interesting. Don't know if I'll play chess again, and I'd probably still get beaten by that first-grader. But at least I'll know more about what's going on.
