Everyone knows how rude and grumpy bears can be if they don't get enough sleep! When a bad-tempered bear trips over a tiny turtle, no-one can foresee the consequence. When Turtle challenges Bear to a race along the lakeshore, Bear is confident about the outcome. But Turtle is smarter than Bear can imagine... Celebrated writer and story-teller Andrew Fusek Peters brings out all the comedy and ingenuity of this traditional Native American trickster tale.
Andrew Fusek Peters is a poet, anthologist, and playwright who has written and edited more than seventy children’s books. He also collected poems for HERE'S A LITTLE POEM: A VERY FIRST BOOK OF POETRY. He lives in Shropshire, England.
This book started out good and then towards the end I became really disappointed. Turtle challenges Bear to a race. Bear runs along the side while turtle is in the water. Turtle pokes his head through different holes to show Bear where he is in the race. However, turtle cheats by having each of his siblings poke their heads through the holes and having turtle finish the race first. I was a little upset that turtle had to cheat to win because that is not teaching good lessons to kids.
The bear in this story is a bully. He thinks that the turtle isn't capable because he is small and slow. Boy does the turtle surprise the fur right off of him when he wins a race - using his ingenuity and a clever trick. Showing kids the value of using your brain is a great message in this story. Teamwork is also extremely valuable to the turtle along the way. Narrative skills and vocabulary are both illustrated here beautifully.
