Although I have always loved Andrea Schwarz' evocative, thoughtful (and self therapy-like) stories about the little dragon Hab-Mich-Lieb (come on, who does not feel all emotionally warm and fuzzy about a little dragon named Please Love Me), this here collection of original Christmas themed tales, while indeed, somewhat sweet, has actually proven to be quite majorly disappointing and uneven (and so much so that I almost rather regret downloading Vom Engel der immer zu spät kam on my Kindle). Now I did smile a bit at Andrea Schwarz’ story of the Easter Bunny helping Santa Claus (especially at Mr. Bunny’s astute assertion and observation that people do not need materialistic gifts as much as they require peace, friendship and general goodwill), but most of the featured stories in Vom Engel der immer zu spät kam and especially the extremely overt and heavy handed holiday messages are really rather pedestrian and ridiculously preachy (and thus, not very nuanced and well balanced). And furthermore, the many, if not constant direct and indirect allusions to God and Jesus Christ does tend to make Von Engel, der immer zu spät kam really mostly if not only suitable to and for Christians (and even at that, to and for those Christians who actually enjoy having faith and belief in God and the Nativity almost served to them as a prominent main dish on a proverbial silver platter). Not a terrible collection by any means, just not really what I was either expecting or hoping to read (and definitely much too obviously dogmatic for my personal tastes). And now, and finally, the collection of Christmas fairy tales contained in Vom Engel, der immer zu spät kam is in German, and while the language used is sufficiently uncomplicated and simple, a basic and decent level of language fluency is nevertheless required. Two and a half stars, and I am sorry to say that I simply cannot find it in me to up the rating to three stars, as my disappointment is a bit too great for that.
