This selection of readings was originally published as a special issue of the journal American Quarterly (Spring 1987). The articles discuss modernism in American culture from a broad variety of perspectives (intellectual-historical, artistic, literary, feminist, African-American, and comparative European & American modernism), as well as with a variety of objects of study, including the Harlem Renaissance, modern art, the rise of advertising, theology, and science.
