Cute story! I am sure curious children will want to know where their soup comes from, too! Good book to share while making the soup. Recipe at end of story. Love the simple illustrations. I think preschoolers-2nd graders would enjoy this story along with a cooking lesson. There really is nothing like a picture book that includes a recipe! Kudos author and illustrator! (BTW- my favorite soup!)
I received a Kindle arc from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review
An oldie, but a funny story about a newlywed bride trying to cook soup for her husband just the way his mother cooked it. There are tons of cute, funny details in the illustrations, like in the spread where she cooks the lentil soup with fish and she's in a rowboat dragging a shark back to shore. It's way out of print, but if you ever come across a copy, give it a read.
I tried making Spoon Bread one time (that's a cornmeal-based bread that's cooked in an iron skillet). It came out a little burnt, and kinda flat. My husband tried it, and said it tasted sort of like something his grandmother would have cooked.
Me: Oh, was she a good cook?
Husband: (distracted as he scoops up another bite) Not really.
I KNEW he wasn't insulting my cooking on purpose, so "Lentil Soup" was the first thing I thought of.
The book is about a wife who cooks Lentil Soup for her husband, and tries to make it the way his mother used to make it. She tries for seven days, using more and more exotic ingredients, until she finally hits on her mother-in-law's secret by accident.
