This was an assigned book for my Windows Operating System Fundamentals course. Overall a good introductory book. Nothing in too great of detail, but it covers a lot of basic information and touches on what I think of as "things to come" in my computer learning career.

I found it hard to just read a chapter and had better results when I worked through a chapter in front of my virtual labs as the lab exercises are integrated in the chapter. And there was a lot of looking up on Google when I was unclear on concepts or my virtual environment was not behaving in the way the book said it would.

It would be nice if they made answers to the end of chapter Knowledge Assessment exercises available. They are useful in pointing you to information you should focus on, but the end of chapter skill summary already does that, as do the Certification Ready pointers throughout the chapter, so the Knowledge Assessment exercises are wasted.

I will be taking the MTA Exam 98-349 in a few weeks, so we will see how this book did to prepare me.

I didn't like that the questions at the end of each chapter did not have the answers included to make them a good study guide for a test.

An introductory to the it world, this is a good primer for those looking to enter or pursue their certification in one of the Microsoft career paths.
