Nourish Your Soul 365 Days a YearThis collection of 365 daily meditations captures the essence of a great spiritual leader—one who has influenced millions with his dynamic message of the power of positive thinking. Each devotion in Around the Year with Emmet Fox works to remind us that our thoughts shape our reality, and helps us access the strength to overcome sorrows, frustrations, and challenges in our daily lives. The keen insights captured here speak as freshly to the everyday needs of humanity as they did the day Fox first wrote them.
Emmet Fox was a New Thought spiritual leader of the early 20th century, famous for his large Divine Science church services held in New York City during the Depression.
Consistent inspiration -- how easy is that to deliver?
Not difficult, though, when the writer is Emmet Fox! To say that I loved this book of daily readings would be a huge understatement.
Maybe suitable for this review, and definitely one of the ultimate compliments from an author: "Around the Year with Emmet Fox" inspired one of my indie-published books, the daybook called "Let Today Be a Holiday."
There are often some interesting insights and I always track down the psalm or passage he mentions. I think it suffers a bit from age (originally published in 1952) and the Bible quotes are, I assume, from the King James version. Not my favorite. I prefer Sarah Young's Jesus Calling.
Still, "Around the Year" is a treasured gift from my mother and I read it every day.
I can’t find one false word in this book. Cracking open the mind and the heart, Emmett Fox speaks Truth and offers hope and peace in his understanding of God and Divine Love. I’m so glad I found it as it has opened the door to new thinking and new power to me in a multitude of ways.
I have been enjoying starting my day with Emmet Fox for years now. One of the leaders in New Thought, Fox has a wonderful way of bringing out the underlying meanings in scripture that is practical and empowering. Highly recommended.
This book is really like a calendar of sorts with a short one to two paragraphs of Emmet Fox pieces of wisdom for the day. Not a book but a series of short takes for each day. Contains 365 separate pages for each day of the year.
Each day has its won pearl of wisdom to help get you through the day. Similar to a quote of the day or cartoon of the day only this is for spiritual. If you enjoy Emmet Fox you will enjoy an easy way to get a daily dose of his insight.
Great set of daily meditations, although quite a heavy punctuation on the Bible - but then if you've read Emmet Fox's other works this isn't a surprise, really.
Once belonging to my former significant other, I snagged ‘Make your Life Worthwhile’ off the shelf when I parted ways after he relapsed on drink & drugs with 15 years of AA to his credit. Shortly thereafter, a listening friend suggested I read Emmet Fox. Thus, I unpacked the book and the first essay I read was ‘Hobo, Cash That Bill.’ Page upon page, the words of this incredible author born in 1886 were as intriguing as he once I began reconnecting with what I had already believed. And so in an eloquent yet simplistic manner, Fox unveils the Truth of Being defined as the power of thought. Over time, he drew crowds of eight & nine thousand twice weekly to the Manhattan Opera House in NYC to hear him speak. So familiar with what he wrote, abbreviated excerpts from his books appear on the pages of the Daily Reader, including a myriad of thematic book titles which bespeak the stately gentleman’s messages on life, truth, constructive thinking, and finding and claiming our inner power. Subsequently, I have read & reread all of his books, including his biography wherein levels of prayer are put forth. Today, my Daily Reader, ‘Around the World with Emmet Fox’ has fallen apart. Now in three sections, banded, taped & retaped, underlined, margin notes all over the pages, yearly I read not only what he wrote, but what I gleaned off those pages the year before! A spiritual expose’, anyone familiar with Scripture knows that when asked, Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God is within.” O, exactly where? As Fox reiterates, the only place it can be. Known as making conscious contact with God, this means in thought, the only place we can so do.
I love to read Emmet Fox because he motivates me to pray. Here’s a a sample of what he says, and you use your discernment: Prayer is really the only thing that matters.. .. Prayer indeed, is the only real action that makes things different. ... Prayer is the only thing that does change the quality of the soul. Other activity may make a quantitative change in the soul by adding experience, or extending one's fund of knowl- edge; but it does not change the quality. . . . There is no end to a prayer. It echoes forever in your soul. Long after the visible demonstration has been made and forgotten, the prayer that produced it continues to work for your spiritual advancement, for the creative power of a God-thought is unlimited and eternal. ..._JJ1ere is no problem that prayer cannot solve at ag time. . . . Cleave to the Truth of God, and the miracle will happen in the last ditch. Pray for rain and dig your ditches. . . . Enough prayer will get you out of your difliculty if only yo!! will be persistent enough.... Prayer is both a science and an art.
This book is timeless. I discovered Emmet Fox a few years ago and have totally enjoyed his message and spiritual guidance in these daily readings. They are simple and profound all at once. Each reminder captures the essence of who and what we are, in the vast scheme of things, and the Point (with a capital P).
Fox was a spiritual leader who had millions of followers in his heyday (20s? 30s?) and was one of the founders of the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous. His teachings are Christian based, but I don't believe you would have to be Christian in order to benefit. His worldview is based on belief in the principles of karma, forgiveness, love and most especially, faith in a loving omnipotent God. If these principles appeal to you, you would most certainly benefit from this and many of his other books.
I personally believe this and his interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount to be extraordinarily insightful.
I'm reading this with a friend. It is biblically based, but I don't always agree with the belief that you can cure illness and other problems just by positively thinking about God. I believe God gets you through these things, doesn't necessarily make them go away or not happen. However, it launches some great conversations with my friend. It's always good for me to read verses and ideas from the Bible. And get the reminder of how important it is to have conscious contact with a higher power, for lack of a better word.
This book is the bridge between Christianity and mysticism. It's a daily reader, built of Emmet Fox's sermons. Fox would have been thrown out of most churches I went to as a kid for being a heretic: his writings showed me that there are unicorns in the bible, that Jesus might have been a Buddhist, and that we are all going to heaven, or are there already. It swept away a lot my resentment toward religious dogma of all types.
This is a daily meditatin book . It has scriptures from the Bible. It may not be a daily reader that everyone can read but I reccomend you read something positive in the morning and maybe we can share books across religions. a friend of mine gave me a Jewish meditation book that I read often. I love reading different genre of meditation books they all talk about being loving and tolerant and helping others. The religions may be different but the Principles are the same !!!
Every couple of years I re-read this book of daily meditations. Each year I get different insights deeper insights and reinforce other insights on life, love and faith. Last year I gave this book to members of a small church community because I thought it was worth sharing.
If you take the time to read this book every morning and keep its message close to your heart throughout the day. All of the sudden you will find every day to be a good day.
started this one exactly a year ago tomorrow - took me the complete year to use this as my daily devotional - the best one EVER - love this man's thinking and have learned so very much
Great explanation of spiritual principles from the teachings of Jesus and the Bible written in the fifties. Amazing overlap with Abraham-Hicks, Eckhart Tolle and other spiritual teachers.
I read this book every year, short passage daily, such a good daily reading. I also read from The Upper Room, Daily Bread, Missions and Bible. There's a balance with Emmet Fox, a spiritual leader.
