A small play originally published in 1968, and performed at the Mccarter Theater in 1972, as I recall. The play remains relevant today and White's insights are spot on. Of tremendous value is his Epilogue which offers a view of White's time on the character, accomplishments, and motivations of Caesar. I'm glad that this summer was the summer of reading about Rome and the it brought me back to this gem.

I am a fan of White's and a political junkie. This did not disappoint.
It is a portrait of a man in his strength and complexity, both as a victim and practitioner of politics. It is also a study of the getting and using of power. This Rome is as much now as then.

Although I came away thinking Teddy White is a much more outstanding writer of non-fiction than he is of plays (there's little action. places where the dialogue feels too blatantly expository , and this is unlikely to interest anyone without a little knowledge of Roman history) -- he certainly knows his Caesar. His epilogue is fascinating.
