Read through this quickly before handing it to Ian. It's well written and exciting, and I'll be looking for the other books in the series!

This was my sons first novel. I read it to him & we would read 6 - 8 pages at a time. We really enjoyed the story about Warton & his Aunt Toolia & how she took care of this baby deer. Warton came looking for her & found some strange new friends in Higg & Bundy.
The Wood rats are a great bunch. There is even some action with a Wildcat & a Daddy buck. It was my book from when I was 8 & loved sharing it with Ryan.

My six year old and I love these books. I like how this author depicts danger as something truly wild and comes with a cost.

When Warton sets out on his annual trip to Aunt Toolia's house, he sets out for adventure. The first night away from home, two wood rats, chased by a wildcat, find Warton's camp site in a hollow tree. The wood rats are traders that live in The Bog. In the morning, they part company, but only for a short time. When Warton arrives at Aunt Toolia's house, he finds her in The Bog tending to an injured fawn. They begin carrying food to the baby deer, but soon realize that they are too small to gather enough food to make a difference. While thinking of ways to get help, Warton hears the off-key bugle music of the wood rats. Warton finds their camp and promises to rid The Bog of the dreaded wildcat in exchange for their help. The wood rats eagerly join forces with Warton and his aunt. With their help and the help of the fawn's father, who shows up at the right moment, Warton keeps his promise.
