A pictorial delight of modern American art in the 20th century that covers the European influence at the turn of the century through to the very modern Pop artists, with much in between.

The cover is by Edward Hopper whose paintings usually reflect loneliness and isolation but for all that they capture time, place and feelings. The three of them featured are all impressive as is Tom Wessleman's 'Great American Nude No 44' (the other 43 aren't featured!), which was painted in 1963 and contains within a miniature copy of a Rubens work of art.

Mary Cassatt one of the earliest painters in the book has a definite impressionist feel to her paintings, perhaps not surprising as she spent much of her early life in Paris and eventually worked alongside Degas.

And, of course, Roy Lichtenstein reflects the comic book appeal, Mark Rothka has one thinking (about what I am not sure) while Andy Warhol is, well, just Andy Warhol - interesting for all that!

A lovely book to browse with a good historical introduction.

I've had this paperback since 2006. It's a great source of American artists. This book is divided into Movement Overview, Society, Places, Influences, and Styles and Techniques. Again each artist's page has a representative piece of art and a short bio of the artist and his school of art. This is a great book to start the person on his art journey!!
