Elliot loves watching the recycling and garbage trucks stop by our house, so this was a fun book for him.

“Sanitation Workers Help Us,” is a very basic introduction to an sanitation worker’s job. Spare text accompanies full-color photographs of diverse sanitation workers providing care to a variety of victims. The very simple text is a good lead-in for pre-school or early elementary children who will be meeting an sanitation crew, or as a springboard to discussion of this community helper’s job. Beginning readers will be able to master this text with very little help.

There is a discrepancy between the text on page 15, “Sanitation workers wear gloves to keep their hands safe,” and the photograph of un-gloved workers sorting bottles in a grubby bin for recycling five pages later.

A brief index and several titles for additional reading are included, along with a table of contents. The author lists two web sites at the end of the book for readers interested in learning more about the topic. The NIEHS (National Institute for Environmental Health Science) web site focuses on “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” and defines waste. It provides links to other web sites related to these topics. The City of Los Angeles’ “Kids Love LA & Keep It Clean,” web site is kid-friendly and includes several theme-related comic books, fun facts, games, and suggestions to reduce waste.
