The springboard for Humility Matters is the teaching on humility of St. Benedict, enriched by the fifteen years Sr. Funk spent in interreligious dialogue.
I read this book after participating in a virtual retreat where the author was one of the leaders. This book challenged me to think about aspects of my faith that I had previously not considered. It took a while to get through because I wanted to be able to "chew" on what I was reading.
Worth the read, but plan to take your time reading this!
Subject Matter Depth The book touches upon various aspects of its subject matter in a systematic way. While it does not delve into extreme details, it provides a sufficient overview for a general understanding. Each chapter introduces a new facet of the topic, building a complete picture by the end. The monastic "Rule of St. Benedict"can be summed up in the phrase, "Be the first to show respect for the other, bearing with patience one another's weaknesses." Funk offers a cogent, practical exploration of a word that derives from the Latin humus, "of the earth, " and explains why monastics consider cultivating humility (having an accurate sense of self and a heart for service) a pillar of the spiritual life.
