Oh.My.God. Where do I even start with this one… I can safely say this is the worst book I have ever read. A brief summary: the book explores the trials and tribulations of an obsessed John Travolta stalker (Robert Randolph himself) as he molds himself to become the ideal man for his idol. Over the course of the book, the author witnesses Hollywood stars engaging in alleged homosexual activities at various spas around LA.
Events are mixed up, episodes are thrown in randomly without any connection to the main theme, characters are completely underdeveloped and assassinated, and many barely 2-3 page chapters are thrown in for good measure. (does Randolph think he is Hemingway or something?) There is nothing resembling a logical flow in this book. The writing is so mind-blowingly dull, repetitive and banal it feels like it was written by an elementary school student rather than someone in his 40s. The author somehow even manages to make getting nearly beaten to death sound so boring!
Apart from the laughably horrible writing, the general tone of the book is incredibly hypocritical, petty and mean-spirited. For example, halfway through the book, after having lost 75 lbs and drastically improved his appearance, the author gives up his quest of chasing Travolta, and no reason is given! The level of hypocrisy is astonishing too - again, without much reasoning, the author slams other men for engaging in sexual activity in spas, yet next to that, proudly admits to directly participating in the action. He also pretty much admits to using spa attendants to gain confidential information, then disposes of them instantly. Spa workers and owners are viciously trashed and thrown under the bus left and right.
On a positive note, the short chapters at the end were a bit better but only marginally so - at least we don’t read about John Travolta being a “horrible sex addict” and “engaging in lewd acts” ad nauseam for 100 pages with barely any elaboration. The chapters on Jean Claude van Damme and George Michael were so hilariously trashy I laughed for days after reading them.
This could have actually been an ok memoir if the author had an ounce of self-awareness and self-criticism. A ghostwriter with some experience in expressing self-reflection, storytelling and building suspense would have been of tremendous help. It is just mind-boggling to think that someone, be it even a friend of the author, could have read the manuscripts before the book was published and said: “Yep pal, great job, this is going to be an amazing book!‘
Awful. My mistake in reading it of course. I actually do not see the point to the book. To be so obsessed and then so critical of one person seems ridiculous. Only one person comes out of this badly and that’s the author.
This book was an entertaining read, but it became apparent about half-way through, that this guy definitely has some kind of axe to grind with Travolta. Considering that he mentions many other celebrities and their "questionable" behavior, the fact that he is so fixated on Travolta leads one to wonder if he is simply a "woman scorned". By the time I finished, I was very skeptical of the author's credibility, but it was amusing none- the- less. I am still a Travolta fan regardless of his bad behavior or sexual orientation.
