Rate this book
A distinguished array of contributors intersect with and pay tribute to the work of Graham N. Stanton. The passing of Professor Graham Stanton, former Lady Margaret chair of divinity at Cambridge University, in 2009 marked the passing of an era in Matthean scholarship and studies of early Christianity. Stanton's fifteen books and dozens of articles span thirty-four years and centre largely on questions pertaining to the gospel of Matthew and early Christianity. The present volume pays tribute to Stanton by engaging with the principal areas of his research and the Gospel of Matthew and Early Christianity . The distinguished contributors include; Richard Burridge, David Catchpole, James D.G. Dunn, Craig A. Evans, Don Hagner, Peter Head, Anders Runesson and Christopher Tuckett. Formerly the Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement, a book series that explores the many aspects of New Testament study including historical perspectives, social-scientific and literary theory, and theological, cultural and contextual approaches. Edited volumes are always a bit hit and miss. But this volume, because it was a memorial gathering for Graham Stanton, a giant in biblical studies over the past 30 years, a who's-who of insightful and influential Matthean scholars contributed to this work, and the result is incredibly impressive. The essays are all brief enough, while making economic use of space, and each has something valuable to add to the specific issue at hand. A rare case where every essay gave me something to think through. This is definitely a volume I'll come back to often.
