There are about 100 different stingray species, but there are not a lot of juvenile books about these shark cousins. Despite their generally docile behavior, stingrays can cause serious danger with their barbed tales. The venomous barb of some stingray species is able to kill an adult human in minutes. Zieger’s descriptions of stingray traits, camouflage, life cycles, and behaviors are accompanied by colorful, full-page photographs. Although people have been aware of stingrays since ancient times, scientists do not have enough information on stingrays to track their numbers. It is uncertain how many stingray species are endangered or threatened. Yet stingrays live in fresh- and salt-water worldwide. This slender volume is a good starting point for readers in learning about these elusive, mysterious creatures. A glossary, index, and brief list of suggested books rounds out this book.
