In the early 1990s Katy, a young reporter, arrives in Sarajevo, a city under siege, and receives conflicting advice from two colleagues. 'Of all the wars I've been in,' a news cameraman tells her, 'this is the one where it's not possible to 'be objective'. You can't be objective about what's going on here.' 'This is not my war or your war,' an Italian journalist explains. 'We just report what we see, but we stay outside it. We can't get too involved. We mustn't get too near.' But Katy does get too near…

Oh my. I can't really give this one to students, can I? It opens with such power that it feels like a punch in the stomach. Everyday life in Sarajevo under siege, the community of international reporters and how they cope with the challenges of their profession are interesting and well written, but all the romantic plots are painfully clichéd, flat, uninteresting. However, the opening scene hit very hard even when it appeared a second time, with more context. It was a very mixed experience.

One of the best contemporary books I've read so far. It's breathtaking, though it has a few cliché moments. The ending is beautiful - it offers disclosure but it also raises some questions - just about the right amount of drama. That's how it ensures its position as a book that cannot be easily forgotten. I highly recommend it to anybody who, like me, doesn't usually go for books that contain even the slightest implication of war in their résumé. It's refreshing to bring down the walls of bias!

Interesting book located in Sarajevo during the Balkan War - the completion of a circle in many ways.
