This in-depth analysis of the tactics and equipment used by Japan's infantry between 1941 and 1945 includes descriptions of their training and how that training influenced their success or failure on the battlefield, where after 1943 the Japanese fought a skillful and brave defense against overwhelming odds and firepower. Full-color artworks show weapons and equipment to full effect, while tactics and fighting techniques are explained by means of detailed line artworks.
Packed with B/w pics, colour plates and maps and diagrams- this book aims to take on all aspects of the Japanese Land Warfare machine in WWII and the period leading up to it. And it does a pretty good job. And while I have a few quibbles with some of it's supporting history section, where it downplays the Fascist-style changes to Japanese Society in the late 20s- I do think it may be the one book a Gamer/Modeller may need to develop their Japanese forces/models. Its 96 pages filled with lots of information and images- and not just for the Junior Reader. I think this may be that one book you can give a Sci-Fi/RPG gamer in your club - and bring them up to date for a Pacific Campaign in Bolt Action/Flames Of War/Battlegroup/Angriff. And those are a good thing.
The chapters are Martial Traditions, Training, Organisation, Tactics,Small Arms and Support/Armour, and all are liberally sprinkled with good B/w shots and diagrams. The Japanese army is the Rare WWII army that does not transition to better equipment throughout the passage of the war- fighting with the same gear all the way through- so Leo Daugherty III, the author, has little trouble covering all the bases. I might have liked some colour plates of the Tanks and Guns, but there are many other places to get help with that. It's a very solid presentation.
For the Junior reader, there are few adult themes- and little gore- a more complete discussion of "Comfort Women" and Japanese Atrocities are left for other sources- so this is fine for any reader over about 10. For the Gamer/Modeller/Military Enthusiast, it's a pretty good find. Plenty of ideas for Scenario/Diorama development, and good colour plates to define uniforms are everywhere in the book. There are good diagrams of tactical doctrine and defensive positions that will aid in creating terrain pieces for the Pacific War. A fine addition to the burgeoning WWII Library.
