C.W. Anderson - aka Clarence William Anderson
From Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarence...

Clarence William Anderson (1891–1971) was an author and illustrator of children's books. Known professionally as C.W. Anderson, Anderson had an interest in horses and drawing.

Anderson started his career by illustrating for other authors, but eventually began developing texts to accompany his realistic and lively black and white drawings. He is best known for his "Billy and Blaze" book series.

The adventures of Billy and Blaze would revolve around proper care of the horse, while teaching a lesson. Anderson would go to great lengths to give accurate information. He would even go on to write Heads Up, Heels Down as a training tool for young horse lovers. All of the stories Anderson wrote would be based on true stories or people that Anderson knew, only the plots were fiction.

By the end of Anderson's life, he had written and illustrated over thirty-five horse books, and also had created covers for the Saturday Evening Post.

I'm a C. W. Anderson fan, but I'd never heard of this book until I joined Goodreads. It was published in 1971, so I think this was his second to last book, the final being The Blind Connemera.

This is a typical Anderson story, where an unwanted pony gets his day in the sun. The Pony is discovered by three kids riding in a car with a rumble seat. Kids riding like that today would be promptly taken away from their parents, but 1971 was a vastly different world.

There is a note at the end of the book about how Anderson did the illustrations in the book. I don't remember him doing that for any other book.

This rare pony book is currently up on The Open Library, but there's two tricks to finding it, since just entering the title or even entering C. W. Anderson will take you to a dead end.

* Try looking for Blaze and the Gypsies. Then, click on the link for the author's name. That will lead you to a four or five page list, which includes this book.
* Enter this title exactly, "The Rumble Seat Pony, To Melissa, Pam, Peter and there Pony, Vicky" Yeah, you need the misspelling, too.

Good luck.

I love C.W. Andersons young reader horse stories. The writing is simple and the pictures are so beautiful. This particular story is one I had never heard of and recently came across it at a library and decided to give it a try. It reminds me of days gone past. I always wished I was one of the kids in his stories who just happened to come across a horse and lived in a place where they could keep it and had parents who were able to afford to keep it....not the reality I grew up but it reminds that at one time I sure wish I did.

It did not take all that time to read it, it was actually a very quick read and I just had it sitting on my book stack all that time.
