The world is noisy and disorientating. Our hearts need beauty and truth. Heather Holdsworth experienced the death of her father followed shortly by the death of her mother. A few years later she battled a sickness that left her without the strength to stand, walk, or even speak. She opened the book of Psalms. She began writing. And from her writing emerged drawings that brought solace to her soul. Through the medium of art and words, artist and Bible teacher Heather Holdsworth shares an illustrated journey into the Psalms. Landscape of Hope takes passages that have become familiar—perhaps too familiar—and reveals their soul-strengthening, heart-restoring power. Through artwork and commentary, readers find themselves deeply engaging with the Bible and the triune God. Heather invites us to come alongside her in discovering the artistry, symmetry, and wonder of this ancient text. Readers experience the presence of the Eternal as they engage with the truth of life's fragility and find hope in a renewed vision of God.
The author breaks up Psalms 1-14 with a few verses per page, paired with word art on the other page. She had some good insights I enjoyed, but some of it was too chatty/too many stories, but that was entirely my own tendency to rush through stories and want to get to the Greek translation, context clues, and other inductive Bible study methods. The word art sometimes helped me visualize the verses but other times seemed very abstract in style, and were hard to figure out what was being illustrated, but that may be because I’m not too familiar with this type of art.
I say "finished" loosely, because I know that I will come back to this book many times. Heather has gifted us with a phenomenal work of creativity here: the first fourteen psalms carefully drawn and meditated on in a way that invites us to sit a little longer. Listen a little deeper. Lament with freedom and praise with more awe.
I highly recommend this book for a deeper dive into the first 14 Psalms. Seeing them sketched-out was so unique, and you learn experience them in such a different way. I felt moved as I read, and inspired to write my own poetry. The Psalms are so real, and raw, and David cried out to the Lord in an unfettered, unedited way. I feel more connected to my Lord, and the full range of human emotions that he gave us.
A gift for the eyes and food for the soul. This book is simply beautiful. It helps the reader really slow down and meditate on the passages. The drawings are so unique and add another level depth and meaning to these timeless Psalms.
