Flying through the night, fireflies flicker their lights to find partners. These glowing fliers are adapted to life at night. Learn more about these blinky nocturnal animals in Fireflies.
This book introduces the insect firefly, which is a type of beetle.
This book, illustrated with color photographs, gives a basic introduction to fireflies. It describes where they live, their physical characteristics including their bioluminescence, what they eat, their life cycle, their predators, and their defense mechanisms.
A table of contents is included at the front of the book, and a glossary, an index, and a bibliography for further reading are included at the back of the book.
I so appreciate the way science is introduced in an easy readable format with actual photographs and facts that are understandable to that age group. A very beautiful book, and I learned that fireflies are larvae for 1 to 2 years before they pupate. You are never too old to learn something new. Now I need to look up what the larvae and pupae look like.
The perennially intriguing insect, long a favorite of children, is studied in this simple early-reader book. At one point, however, an illustrative photo appears not to depict a firefly but rather a soldier beetle.
I really like the Pebble Plus books especially for young children. The pictures and text are large and are not overwhelming. I also like that a colored map of where Fireflies live is included.
