Mary has a passion for collecting things, she is always buying stuff from markets and jumble sales, and wants to open an antique shop when she leaves school. This upsets her older sister Phillipa, who wants to be "something at the Foreign Office, or even a Member of Parliament" and has social ambitions. SHe considers Mary's passion for collecting 'junk' unacceptable, and is particularly anxious that her smart new friend Irene doesn't find out about Mary's hobby. But to Phillipa's dismay, Irene tuns out to be a junk collector herself, and she and Mary are both after the same collection of Victorian dolls from a house sale. This leads to complications. This is quite a pleasant short book, the story could perhaps have been more interesting if the characters had been fleshed out a bit more, and the plot perhaps a little stronger. A secret diary which Mary finds for instance could perhaps have led on to something, but goes nowhere. As it is, the story, though quite enjoyable, is a little thin.
